The most expensive house in the world

Have you ever considered buying an old castle and completely remodeling it to rival the Palace of Versailles itself? The crown prince of Saudi Arabia does. Its budget: 270 million euros.

There are buildings in the world beyond all calculable value (the Taj Mahal in India, the White House in Washington or the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, to name a few). Among those that do have a known market value, the “pride” of holding the record for the most expensive house in the world is held by the Chateau Louis XIV in Louveciennes (France). This “chateau” is modeled after 17th century French chateaux, but was demolished and completely rebuilt between 2008 and 2011 to accommodate all the luxuries and comforts of the 21st century.

Among its features, in addition to the 10 full suites, we can highlight the reception room with its vaulted ceiling of more than 15 m (49 ft). The building is surrounded by a huge aquarium with sturgeons, doors and columns decorated with gold leaf, more than 230,000 m2 of gardens, statues and fountains, a squash court, a wine cellar for more than 3,000 bottles, an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, a cinema and a private night club, and two dance floors.

If anyone worried that the crown prince was spending too much on his new home, they can rest easy. In 2015 he bought a megayacht worth €530 million and soon after became particularly famous when he bought Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “Salvator Mundi” for €410 million. Not satisfied with that, he recently became the flamboyant new owner of Premier League side Newcastle United. We only have to wonder if he will watch the games in his castle or from the megayacht.
